Kai Luckham
Solicitor

Kai Luckham is a highly experienced criminal defence solicitor with over 20 years’ experience in criminal law, supported by many years of wider legal practice prior to qualifying as a solicitor. Over the course of his career, Kai has developed extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system and has represented clients across a broad spectrum of criminal and regulatory matters.

Kai has practised across a number of jurisdictions throughout England and Wales, including Manchester and London, acting for clients facing investigations and proceedings in both the Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court. He continues to advise and represent clients nationally where required, bringing a calm, methodical and strategic approach to every case he handles.

Throughout his career, Kai has been involved in the preparation and progression of a wide range of cases, from summary matters through to serious and complex allegations. His experience includes advising clients at the earliest stages of an investigation, assisting with case preparation, reviewing evidence, and supporting the development of effective defence strategies to ensure that clients receive robust and well-prepared representation.

Kai has developed particular expertise in Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) proceedings, an area of law that often runs parallel to criminal prosecutions and requires careful financial and legal analysis. He regularly advises clients on confiscation proceedings, restraint orders, cash detention, and forfeiture matters, assisting in cases where significant financial assets are at risk. His work often involves detailed examination of financial evidence and working closely with clients and professionals to challenge the assumptions relied upon by prosecuting authorities.

In addition to POCA work, Kai has substantial experience dealing with financial crime and regulatory investigations, including cases involving allegations of fraud, money laundering, and complex financial offending. He has worked on matters involving investigations by HMRC and other government agencies, where the analysis of financial records, business transactions, and documentary evidence plays a central role in the preparation of the defence.

Kai’s approach to case preparation is thorough and strategic. He is experienced in analysing large volumes of case material, identifying evidential weaknesses, and ensuring that cases are progressed with careful attention to detail. His work often involves coordinating with counsel, experts, and other professionals to ensure that cases are properly prepared and that clients receive clear advice on their position and the options available to them.

In recent years, Kai has also developed notable experience in representing children and vulnerable adults involved in police investigations. These cases require a particularly careful and sensitive approach, as well as a clear understanding of the additional safeguards and procedures that apply when vulnerable individuals are involved in the criminal justice process. Kai ensures that clients in these circumstances are properly supported and that their rights are protected throughout any investigation or proceedings.

Clients value Kai for his measured, pragmatic and reassuring approach, particularly in situations where individuals may be facing significant personal and legal pressure. He is known for providing clear, realistic advice, ensuring that clients fully understand the process, the evidence, and the strategic decisions that may need to be made during the course of their case.

With over two decades of experience in criminal defence, Kai brings a wealth of practical knowledge, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for those he represents. His experience and steady approach make him a trusted and valued member of the Tyler Hoffman criminal defence team.
